Jr Chef’s Cooking Program

Food preparation throughout history has always been symbolic of fellowship, pleasure, and necessity, basically food is… life.  This is the basis of what our goal is at the Skill Center. As we go through these tough economic times, our programs will instruct people of all ages how to get the most from their food dollar. From the very beginning of gardening, animal husbandry, to meal planning, nutrition, preparation, storing/ canning and also recycling.  All of these skills come together so that people can become self sufficient, eat healthier, save money and perhaps the most important of all, the joy and satisfaction that comes from preparing and sharing a meal with family and friends.

We will also continue to grow our founding Jr. Grillers program.  We are currently working with two age groups 4th through 8th graders and 9th through 12th graders. During this hands on curriculum both age groups learn about responsibility, respect, problem solving, and the importance of working together in a fun and exciting atmosphere.  The younger group is instructed on basic and intermediate kitchen skills, meal planning and preparation and the history and science of food.  The older group is an intensive hands on curriculum that includes intermediate to advanced kitchen skills and involves all aspects of competitive cooking which includes the planning, preparation and execution of competing in regional KCBS (Kansas City BBQ Society) competitions.
